Frequently Asked Questions

Q:        Where do I get information about filling out the application?

A:        First read the Instructions and Guidelines, in the application.  These pages explain the application, the process and where to get further information.  You can also get information from the ENF web site, http://www.elks.org/ENF/Scholars/default.cfm.   If your question is not answered contract the committee chair either by email or phone.

Q:      Given a December application due date, when should I take the SAT or ACT?

A:
ACT and/or SAT scores are required. You need to take either the ACT or SAT before the middle of November, in order to qualify for the MVS Scholarship,  Take them as soon as you can, the end of your junior year, October or early November.  Remember we take the highest score of those you take, so if your Math is higher your junior year we will count that score, not the lower score you may have received in October of your senior year.  Make sure you take them in time to get scores before the application due date.

Q:      Should the application be typed?

A:       It is best to type the application, though not necessary.  One of the scoring criteria is appearance.  A typed application has a better appearance.

Q:      What type of folder should I put the application in?

A:       First the rules say it must have inside pockets and clasps.  Traditionally a paper folder is easiest and less cumbersome for the judges to read and go through.  Cardboard and plastic covers should not be used.

Q:      How is the application scored for the MVS?

A:       The application is scored on Scholarship = 500 points, Leadership = 400 points, Financial Need = 100 points.

Q:      Should my hours worked and my community service hours include hours "to present"?

A:       No, only list the hours to the date asked for in the application.  DO NOT list hours "to present", as an example do not put in "Smith Office Supplies  2/2/2012 to present for 100 hrs".  Instead it should be listed as "Smith Office Supplies 2/2/2012 to 9/1/2012 for 100 hrs".

Q:        How do I know if I should give my application to the Gresham Elks Lodge?

A:        You should turn in your application to the closest Elks Lodge from where you live.  Generally if you live within the boundaries of Centennial, Corbett, Gresham-Barlow, Reynolds (if you live in the western part of the district you may be closer to Gateway Elks) and Sandy school districts you should turn your application into the Gresham Elks.  If you go to Portland Adventist, Portland Lutheran, Damascus Christian, Open Door or Alpha high schools you should check to find the closest Elks lodge to your residence.  Also if you reside out of district you should check to find your closest lodge.  Don’t necessarily rely on the lodge finder mentioned in the application.  You may live in a 972__ zip code but live within the jurisdiction of the Gresham Elks.  If in doubt contact the committee chair or check one one of the online map sites.

Q:      What are the next steps after I turn in the application?

A:       The applications are scored according to ENF guidelines.  The committee will pick several candidates to interview for the Sally Lamm Scholarship.  The committee will interview the selected candidates.  Our local ENF and Sally Lamm winners will be notified.  The first place male and female applications will be judged at the District competition.  The first place male and female applications from District automatically be sent to the ENF for judging.  This gives you the chance to win the four year $60,000 scholarship.  There will also be judging on the State level for the first place District winners.  There will be additional scholarship moneys available for those that place in the District competition and at the State level.  Some time in March we will ask our scholarship winners and their parents to attend a Lodge meeting to be introduced to the members.

Q:      Will I be interviewed?

A:      Not all candidates will be interviewed.  Those candidates we are considering for the Sally Lamm Scholarship will be interviewed and must attend.  The other scholarships will be judged on the application.

Q:     How late can I turn in my application on the last day?

A:      It is recommended you deliver the application to the Secretary’s office which opens at 11:00 AM and closes at 5:00 PM Tuesday through Friday.  If you cannot, then the lounge is usually open later, call for hours.  Instructions will be left with the server to accept the applications and mark the time received on them.  Any received before midnight according to our clock will qualify but those received after midnight according to our clock will be disqualified.  Our clock runs fast.
